Ottawa’s interim police chief says he finally has the ability to remove protesters who’ve been parked in front of Parliament Hill for 21 days, because he has support from all levels of government, plus the federal Emergencies Act.
The city police finally have the plan, commitment, and resources needed to end the demonstrations, and their removal is “imminent,” said Steve Bell, interim chief of the Ottawa police. All of those pieces of legislation and supports we’ve got from different levels of government have directly and actively contributed to our ability to ultimately say: We are in a position to move forward, and to end this demonstration,” Bell said Thursday.
One unprecedented measure is the perimeter the police created in downtown Ottawa to ensure anyone entering isn’t doing so for unlawful reasons, such as joining the illegal protest, Bell said. The secured area includes nearly 100 police checkpoints, he said.I know these are measures our community isn’t used to,” Bell said. “They’ll be in place only as long as necessary to remove the unlawful protests.
