Elon Musk unexpectedly dropped his opposition to efforts by the United Auto Workers to organize workers at Tesla’s California plant and invited the union to arrange a vote to determine if its employees want to join the union
. To date, the former employee, Richard Ortiz, hasn’t been rehired and Musk hasn’t deleted the tweet.
Musk’s change of position seems to have been spurred by Biden’s praise for Tesla competitors such as General Motors and Ford, which have announced plans to invest tens of billions of dollars to rapidly build up their production of electric vehicles–and rare mention of his company, the top EV seller in the world last year.
Tesla's Fremont, California, plant was represented by the UAW for 25 years during its previous existence as New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., a Toyota-GM joint venture.Musk has also bristled at his exclusion from White House events focused on electric cars, attended by the CEOs of GM and Ford. That prompted him to angrily slam Biden as a “t” on Twitter on Jan. 28.
Tesla bought its Fremont plant for $42 million from Toyota in 2010 . The former New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. had been a Toyota-GM joint venture plant for 25 years, with workers represented by the UAW during that time. Joined by Toyota’s Akio Toyoda and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to announce the deal, Musk was noncommittal about whether the union would be welcomed back under Tesla ownership.
