Shayla Oulette Stonechild and Joel Oulette\u0027s main motivation for joining Amazing Race Canada was to be an example for Indigenous youth

“A few aspects were missing from the show,” Oulette Stonechild says. “When we first met Deven and Amanda off the plane, we said that we would ally with them because they were the other Indigenous team.”

While the siblings were keen on the challenge of Amazing Race, they both had deeper reasons for wanting to participate. Mostly, they wanted to be role models for Indigenous youth. Oulette Stonechild is Cree and Metis from Muscowpetung First Nation, and her younger brother is Cree and Metis with ties to the Cumberland House Cree Nation. Had they won, they would have donated prize money to Indigenous-led organizations.

While they may have waited until the last minute to apply for the season, the two did put in some intense and varied training before the show began shooting in April. Since the show wrapped, Oulette has been busy with film and TV projects, including the Powell River-shot sci-fi film Can I Get A Witness opposite Sandra Oh and the APTN comedy Don’t Even in Winnipeg.
