, Premier John Horgan’s government said full decarbonization of all B.C. industry will require “widespread electrification,” but did not mention the oil and gas sector specifically.

“Electrification is a good idea where it’s cost-competitive,” he said. “We’re competing for capital, not just within B.C., but with other jurisdictions as well.” But the two completed Hydro projects were envisioned a decade ago, under the B.C. Liberal government, and started before the B.C. NDP government’s 2018 climate plan.

Even if a decision was made soon on the project, which Hydro says could avoid one million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, it would be years before it was complete.
