In the LAUSD District 2 election, Maria Brenes and Rocio Rivas are nearly tied in Nov. 10 election results.
Incumbent Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education President Kelly Gonez, who represents a large swath of San Fernando Valley, was in a surprisingly tight battle against a largely unknown candidate, and the race to replace termed-out board member Mónica García was close in semi-official results released by the Los Angeles County registrar on Thursday, Nov. 10.
The semi-official results show Gonez at 50.94%, and her rival, Marvin A. Rodriguez, at 49.06%. And in District 2, Maria Brenes is at 50.17% and Rocio Rivas is at 49.83%. Gonez squared off on Nov. 8 against high school teacher Marvin Rodriguez, who finished second in the June primary. Rodriguez is a veteran teacher and former Marine who said he wants to improve lines of communication between the district and the community.
Rocio Rivas and Maria Brenes were neck-and-neck in their race to succeed García. The race likely won’t be finalized for days or even weeks, as vote-by-mail ballots continue to be tallied. Rivas squared off Tuesday with Brenes, founder of the InnerCity Struggle advocacy group, who finished second in June.
