Elizabeth LawrenceIn a country ravaged by gun violence – with two mass shootings less than 24 hours apart – an increasingly relevant question persists: When are these violent acts considered domestic terrorism?
The politically motivated aspect is the hardest to prove in mass shooting cases, according to Fait Muedini, an international studies professor at Butler University. Because the El Paso shooter may have left behind evidence of his ideological-motivated violence, it is easier to label as terrorism, Muedini said.FBI's haunting warning about 'lone offenders' paints a grim picture
"They’re both acts of self-help and you have people taking a grievance to a violent extreme and taking things into their own hands," Hawdon said."But the goal for them is slightly different. One is to influence the government and one is to target individuals.""Most white supremacist groups in the U.S. are under lists of domestic terrorism," Muedini said."Hate crimes are acts of terrorism because they are, in one form or another, politically motivated.

Muedini said the reluctance to call mass shootings committed by white, American perpetrators domestic terrorism comes from the idea that terrorists are not"within the fabric of America."
