El empeño de la NFL por convertirse en un deporte global recibió un gran impulso cuando los organizadores de los Juegos Olímpicos de Los Ángeles 2028 presentaron el lunes una propuesta que incluye al fútbol bandera en el programa de la primera cita de verano en Estados Unidos en 32 años.
El Comité Olímpico Internacional deberá votar sobre la propuesta en la reunión que se realizará esta semana en Mumbai, India. La propuesta de Los Ángeles sumó al béisbol y sóftbol, que han entrado y salido del programa durante décadas. También se añadieron otros tres deportes: cricket, lacrosse y squash. El cricket marca todo un contraste con el fútbol bandera.
En los Juegos Mundiales el año pasado, el equipo masculino de Estados Unidos se llevó la medalla de oro y México atrapó el título femenino al vencer a las estadounidenses en la final. La NFL sigue muy interesada en hacer crecer su participación y audiencia.
