Other cities have seen varying results concerning how many hospital trips were avoided once less-serious calls could be sent to nurses

In one recent year, El Cajon dispatchers recorded 115 instances of back pain, 72 headaches and 48 cases of dizziness.

That’s in line with previous estimates from city leaders, who’ve said about a third of all 911 calls are not true emergencies. The first was a 50-year-old woman who reported minor leg pain a little before noon, but she was “uncooperative” with a nurse, Logan wrote in an email. A few hours later, another woman said she had low-level dizziness, but similarly declined a nurse’s help.

El Cajon should expect faster results, said Lisa Edmondson, director of operations for nurse navigation at Global Medical Response. GMR is the parent company for American Medical Response, which is running El Cajon’s program with Heartland.
