The Eglinton Crosstown light rail line in Toronto is set to undergo platform repair work before it even opens to the public. Metrolinx, the agency responsible for the project, announced that work will begin on January 13, 2025, involving rolling lane closures along Eglinton Avenue East. The repairs are necessary to address platform deficiencies identified in the still-unopened Line 5 Eglinton.

Metrolinx has revealed new details about the long-delayed Eglinton Crosstown project, stating that platform repair works will commence on a section of the line along Eglinton Avenue East near Kennedy Road as early as Monday, January 13, 2025. This means the Eglinton Crosstown will undergo repairs before Toronto residents have even had the opportunity to ride it.

According to Metrolinx's latest construction notice, crews will be performing platform deficiency repair works at stops along Eglinton Avenue East, between Brentcliffe Road and Kennedy Road. A statement released on January 13th explains that a segment of the still-unopened Line 5 Eglinton requires these 'platform deficiency repair works.' Metrolinx advises the public that rectifying these issues will involve 'periodic short-term rolling lane closures' along a stretch of Eglinton that has already endured significant construction disruptions. During these rolling closures, access to properties, including businesses and residences, will always be maintained, along with at least one single lane of traffic along Eglinton. Work is expected to be carried out from Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., though Metrolinx advises locals that 'short-term lane reductions may be required' along this stretch even after the deficiency repairs are completed. The Crosstown project, originally slated for completion in 2020, has faced numerous delays since construction began in 2011. Now, nearly five years past the projected opening date, commuters eagerly await the line's launch. Once complete, this initial phase of the future TTC will feature 25 stops and stations, promising to move passengers up to 60 percent faster than existing bus service
