Edmonton city council's executive committee approves a four-year subscription to the Transit app, giving all users full features at no extra cost, funded within the existing budget.

Edmonton's city council executive committee has approved a recommendation to purchase a four-year subscription for Edmonton's transit app, giving all users access to its full suite of features. The decision was made on Friday, with the $540,000 annual subscription funded within Edmonton Transit's existing budget and no extra cost to riders.

Full Features for All Riders

Carrie Hotton-MacDonald, branch manager of Edmonton Transit Service, said the fully featured app offers riders more trip-planning options while integrating on-demand transit service and other transportation modes, including Uber and rentable e-scooters.

The subscription also unlocks the app's Rate My Ride feature, allowing users to provide feedback directly through the platform. Hotton-MacDonald told reporters that this feedback will help the city directly implement actions to make transit better for users.

The app's Royale tier will be available to all users. Hotton-MacDonald said the upgrade will make the app even more seamless, convenient, and easy to use, while also adding an element of fun.

Gamification and User Engagement

Hotton-MacDonald described the gamification features included in the Royale tier. Users can earn points for the number of trips they book, create user profiles, and use different stickers to add a fun element to their representation in the app.

These added features will not come at an extra cost to riders. The $540,000 annual subscription will be funded within Edmonton Transit's existing budget.

Other major Canadian cities, including Calgary, give users full-time access to the Transit app's Royale features. This move brings Edmonton in line with those cities.

Data and System Improvements

Mayor Andrew Knack said both riders and the city will benefit from the investment. He stated that users will get their money's worth because they will get a much better experience, and the city will get its money's worth because the data received allows for better and faster improvements to the system.

Knack, who sits on the executive committee, said the report showed that data can be received daily, showing where people are identifying gaps and where they are saying things are working well. That type of data means the system can be consistently improved, so that everyone using it feels appreciated and valued.

The approval of the subscription is part of ongoing efforts to enhance public transit in Edmonton. With the full-featured app, riders will have access to more tools to plan their trips and provide feedback, while the city gains valuable data to improve services.

The funding for the subscription comes from the existing budget, ensuring that no additional financial burden is placed on riders. The four-year commitment indicates a long-term strategy to improve transit experiences and system efficiency.
