An Edmonton senior alleges a tax consultant stole his $32,000 tax rebate by changing his address and banking information. The CRA is facing criticism for its handling of the situation.

An Edmonton senior is demanding a refund after he alleges his tax rebate of $32,000 was stolen by a tax consultant who had access to his account. Bruce Currie claims the consultant filed his 2023 taxes, changed his address and banking information to her own, then withdrew the funds. The Canada Revenue Agency ( CRA ) stated that the money was deposited into the 'account of record' from the time the assessments were done.

Currie expressed frustration with the CRA, stating their inaction allowed the theft to occur.Currie initially sought the disability tax credit through the consultant, but after being approved for 100 percent, he decided to file independently. He claims the consultant, instead of honoring his request, exploited the situation. The Edmonton Police Service confirmed an ongoing fraud investigation, although charges haven't been laid yet. Global News reached out to the CRA for comment but received a delayed response, only providing instructions on reporting fraud. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warns against phishing and fraud, particularly during tax season, urging individuals to regularly verify their direct deposit information and ensure their personal details haven't been altered.
