Edmonton Reptile Expo at St. Albert Enjoy Centre on Saturday featured reptiles, amphibians, and family fun. The event, running all weekend, supports Herptile Rescue and Education Foundation.
The Edmonton Reptile Expo took place on Saturday at the St. Albert Enjoy Centre, showcasing a wide variety of reptiles and amphibians. The annual event, organized by the Herptile Rescue and Education Foundation (HREF), has been running since 1994 and continues to grow each year, according to organizers.
Expo Growth and Future Plans
Organizers say the expo has expanded significantly over the years. Mikayla Chevrier told CTV News Edmonton that the event is now outgrowing its current venue and they need to find a larger space. The expo aims to introduce the public to reptiles and amphibians in a family-friendly setting.
Visitors had the opportunity to interact with some animals, including HREF boa ambassador Yoshi. The event also served as a marketplace for enthusiasts to purchase pets and supplies. All proceeds from the expo went to support HREF rescue operations.
Rescue Efforts and Education
HREF takes in animals from unsuitable homes or from animal care and control, ensuring they receive proper veterinary care, Chevrier explained. The expo highlighted the importance of responsible pet ownership and education.
Bearded dragon owner Leanne Jiwan emphasized the need for more education about reptiles. She noted that some people view reptiles as throwaway pets, and shared that one of her rescues was found in a dumpster in December. Jiwan believes expos are essential for spreading awareness about the care these animals require.
She was at the event helping her granddaughters learn about the responsibilities of caring for a pet snake. Jiwan stressed that with proper care, these animals can live long lives and be loving companions.
Community Engagement and Weekend Run
The Enjoy Centre was filled with dedicated owners and enthusiasts committed to proper reptile care. The Edmonton Reptile Expo continues throughout the weekend, offering more opportunities for the public to learn and engage.
