The assault is alleged to have occurred in mid-2024 during a medical imaging procedure. On August 12, 2024, Aasim Syed Ahmed, 53, was charged with one count of sexual assault . Police released a statement on Wednesday, August 16, 2024, stating that they believe there may be more victims and that Ahmed may still be practicing as a sonographer.
The Edmonton Police Service is urging anyone who believes they may have been a victim of sexual assault by Ahmed to contact them at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.Cynthia Carels, a lawyer specializing in medical malpractice and sexual abuse at Weir Bowen LLP, spoke about the vulnerability of patients in medical settings. She highlighted the fact that patients are often in undress and behind closed doors, making them susceptible to abuse. Carels emphasized the importance of ongoing consent during procedures, even if a patient has already signed a general consent form. She stressed that patients have the right to request a chaperone and should report any instances of violation to the police or relevant regulatory bodies. Carels also addressed the psychological impact of abuse or malpractice in medical facilities, noting that patients may develop a fear of being alone with doctors, which can negatively affect their overall health. She urged individuals who have experienced such trauma to seek support and take action to hold perpetrators accountable
