Once transported to the detainee management unit at 2 p.m., the man was medically assessed again and cleared for custody. He was described by the DMU paramedic as appearing highly intoxicated but fit for incarceration. As the man’s condition deteriorated while in custody, Edmonton police provided notification under the Police Act and ASIRT was directed to investigate. The investigation focused on whether police conduct caused or contributed to the man’s condition and death.
