The Edmonton Elks football team organized a holiday shopping spree for 300 children from less fortunate families.
The holiday season can be a challenging time for families facing financial difficulties. To help, local organizations, including charities and sports teams, are stepping up to support less fortunate families. Edmonton Elks hosted a holiday shopping spree for about 300 children, each receiving a $200 gift card to purchase presents at Walmart in Kingsway Mall. Current players, alumni, and cheerleaders joined the kids for the experience, handing out gift cards and Elks gear.
Trent Brown, a lawyer and former Elks member, emphasized the impact of the event, stating that seeing the children's faces and interacting with their heroes brings joy and reminds them that these athletes are just like everyone else. Kids Up Front, an Edmonton organization that provides opportunities for children and youth, collaborated with over a hundred agencies to select children who could benefit from this holiday boost. The program coordinator, Keona Buschert, highlighted the importance of understanding the families' backgrounds and alleviating the financial pressure they face during the holidays. Tegan Gislason, another program coordinator, added that the event allows families to relax and enjoy the holiday season without worrying about upcoming expenses or Christmas gifts
