Nowhere was punishment ever mentioned and it seems that aspect of incarceration has entirely eluded government and prison officials.
The report said that after his application for a transfer to a medium security facility was denied in June 2022, Bernardo worked with senior management at Millhaven to better meet the requirements for the move.Article contentGiven that psychopaths are often manipulative and pathological liars, one wonders whether this Damascene conversion to good behaviour is real or a front to get what he wants.
Tim Danson, lawyer for the families of Bernardo’s victims, said the Parole Board of Canada has twice found Bernardo has, “no remorse, empathy or insight into his crimes.” In a statement, Danson wondered why the CSC didn’t wait until after the next Parole Board hearing in November before considering the appropriateness of a move.
“Sadistic, sexual psychopaths who have not exhibited any remorse, empathy or insight into their unspeakable crimes, after being incarcerated for over 28 years, as determined by the PBC at Mr. Bernardo’s last two parole hearings, should never be transferred to a medium security prison,” Danson said. The law needs to change. People who do the unspeakable things Bernardo did to Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy can never be rehabilitated. All we can do is punish them by locking them up in maximum security jails for the rest of their natural lives.
