Editorial: Kleberg in the Democratic runoff of Texas land commissioner

Should a member of the family that owns Texas’ most famous ranch — the legendary 825,000-acre King Ranch in south Texas — really be the guy Texans trust to oversee the state’s 13 million acres of public lands?

His opponent, Sandragrace Martinez, 48, outperformed him in the March 1 vote, and will be competitive in their race for a spot on November’s ballot against either Tim Westley or Sen. Dawn Buckingham, the Republicans seeking to succeed Land Commissioner George P. Bush. Martinez is a clinical therapist and former parole officer whose website notes she worked as a legislative aide to former Texas Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio.

“Texas deserves representation that believes in combating climate change and bringing people together,” Kleberg, 44, told us. “If elected, I will refocus the office to protect our most vulnerable communities on the coast … and ensure that we are passing on a more healthy, accessible environment to the next generation.”If he gets the chance to do that, he’ll bring firsthand exposure to the people and places that bear the brunt of some of the office’s most partisan activities.
