StarEditorial: International Trade Minister Mary Ng should step down. As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has noted, Canadians expect ministers to act with integrity and accountability.
. Ng and Alvaro are friends. Over 20 years, they have celebrated special occasions, such as birthdays, and travelled together. Yet Ng failed to recuse herself from the contracting process.
Ng explained that the onset of the pandemic — and resulting onslaught of media requests — added urgency to get media training in April, 2020. Yet as Dion notes, that’s no excuse, given the previous contract given to Alvaro’s company the previous year. “I believe that Ms. Ng had ample time to contemplate compliance measures,” he found.
That brings us to the principle of ministerial accountability. Trudeau seems to have laid it out quite clearly in 2015. Yet as Ministerial accountability does not mean that ministers have to be all-knowing and take personal responsibility for all that transpires in a department, a point highlighted by the Open and Accountable Government guide.
