Too many elite athletes struggle in a toxic culture. It’s time to end that. We need to create an athlete-centred environment that permeates all Canadian sports organizations, and indeed, all sports from the children’s level to the Olympics. StarEditorial
and federal Sports Minister Pascale St-Onge has said she’s received complaints about at least eight NSOs, including those governing gymnastics, sliding , athletics, artistic swimming, soccer, boxing, rugby and rowing. Gymnastics Canada is, additionally, now the subject of a class action lawsuit filed by a former athlete.
And athletes who seek to remedy this sorry situation have little recourse, as many organizations demand silence and obedience above all else. The office should make significant inroads in dismantling the toxic cultures, but it won’t solve the problem by itself. To be sure, an arms-length, independent system for resolving complaints is crucial, but we also need to repair the cultures that result in so many complaints in the first place.
That means that unlike in the current environment, where athletes are treated as pawns to be pushed around — and sometimes, sacrificed — at the whim of the powers-that-be, athletes must be intimately involved in every aspect of their sports, from governance to administration to execution.
