Canada received a record number of immigrants between 2016 and 2021, welcoming 1.3 million newcomers.

Our largest cities, usually the destination for immigrants, already have housing crises on their hands. Soaring prices have put home ownership out of the reach of young people. Renters struggle to find affordable accommodation..There’s no point in raising the expectations of newcomers by directing them to those major urban centres.

The federal government’s plan so far has been to shrug off the problem to small towns and cities such as Niagara Falls and Cornwall. This is unacceptable and unsustainable. They should be directed to smaller and more remote centres — not by dropping them unsupported into motels as they now do, but by developing programs that help them integrate quickly into the fabric of Canadian life.

Local governments will have to plan for schools and social services to ensure enough supports are in place. Around the globe, Canada is viewed as a vast country with plenty of room to accommodate newcomers, especially at this time of unprecedented worldwide migration. While it’s true we have land, we don’t have the will to develop it. The NIMBY movement springs into action any time an old building is slated for demolition to make way for an apartment building or land is freed up to build new homes. If the answer is yes, then we’d better prepare now.
