Nobody really wants these outcomes — not even the two Republican Harris County commissioners whose unfortunate partisan maneuvering may make them reality. “Starting with our meetings over two weeks ago, I was clear that we must prioritize our budget, cut wasteful spending, and address the historic crime rate,” Ramsey told the editorial board in a statement. “The court chose to ignore the wishes of my precinct.”
The budget stalemate underscores a fundamental difference of opinion between both parties on the role of county government, which has expanded under Judge Lina Hidalgo to include investments in early childhood education, public health and criminal justice reform.
