Tensions at this particular school are blamed, in part, on the decision to blend two student bodies, the result of a fire that gutted another high school. It’s hard to understand why problems were not anticipated here, especially after parents and students had voiced opposition to the plan. In that vein, the board made clear that it alone cannot solve the problem. “Creating safer schools goes beyond the work of a single School Board,” it states.
The board will also ask the province to restore $2.5 million in funding that allowed school spaces to be opened to community groups on nights and weekends. It was encouraging to hear provincial Education Minister Stephen Lecce voice concern for the situation. Providing this funding which was cut in 2019 would be a good first step.
