Last week, King Charles III and his wife, Queen Camilla, enjoyed a gloriously successful state visit to France.

The visit was a demonstration of the “soft power” of the monarchy. Without the constraints of politics, Charles was able to bridge the divide between the two nations. Fair enough. But Canadians are likewise optimistic and ingenious. And he will one day be head of state in this country. So why have the Royals chosen to visit two republics, France and the U.S., before visiting one of the constitutional monarchies of which Charles is head of state? Has Justin Trudeau’s government invited them? Royals can’t just show up. They must wait for an invitation from Heritage Canada. Has it been forthcoming and, if not, why not? What’s going on?
