EDITORIAL: Hospital closures are not acceptable

These past few weeks, something Canadians aren\u0027t used to seeing has been happening – hospitals have been closing.

These hospitals are about a 30 minute drive away from each other. There is clearly a reason they were constructed where they were and when they were – because the communities had a need for them.

Closing these hospitals periodically isn’t how public healthcare is supposed to work. Canadians pay a lot for their healthcare. It’s typically the biggest expense for each provincial government. Yet now we find provinces are failing to provide this basic service. We can and should explore the causes behind these shutdowns. For the most part, they’re due to staffing issues. There just aren’t enough staff, particularly nurses, to keep things running during shifts.tap here to see other videos from our teamWhy? There are many reasons: People are home sick, with COVID-19 or something else; people are taking vacation time; they’re leaving their job due to burnout; many unvaccinated staff still aren’t allowed to return.

This needs to be treated like the dire issue it is – and Canada’s premiers need to feel the heat and start responding to this crisis.Share this Story:
