That was just one of the showstoppers from the latest parliamentary committee hearings into the crisis in men’s hockey. We now know the lightning fast decision by Hockey Canada’s board of directors in May to settle sexual assault allegations involving some members of the 2018 world junior team was made in camera, that is, in private.
Case in point: when asked about total payouts made to settle sexual assault allegations, Hockey Canada’s chief financial officer said that $7.6 million was paid out of the National Equity Fund to cover nine settlements. The vast bulk of that — $6.8 million — was paid to the victims of convicted sex offender and onetime junior coach Graham James.
Perhaps that helps explain why Smith, who has been with Hockey Canada since 1997, seemed to have a hard time acknowledging that events enveloping the so-called national game have been cataclysmic. One incident is one too many, Smith said, blandly.
