Chicago’s “Welcoming City” ordinance is coming under fire again in City Council, a consequence of opposition to migrants heating up.

Lightfoot, with characteristically heated rhetoric, dismissed such comments by Lopez and another opponent of the measure, Ald. Anthony Napolitano, 41st, as “racist, xenophobic and misguided,” needlessly adding, “Shame on you.
And the question remains as to whether federal immigration agents are the best people to respond. Or can such crimes be best handled by local police who are more directly accountable to the public they serve?As popular as his proposal may be, Lopez’s list is not expected to enjoy smooth sailing on this contentious issue.
