seeking greater urgency from the federal government in getting relatives and friends who helped Canada there out of the country.as a disturbing New York Times investigation made clear this week,Last summer, Canada appeared to roll out the welcome wagon, introducing a special immigration program for Afghans who served this country as interpreters, security guards and other roles at the embassy in Kabul.
It is surely frustrating to the point of infuriating to see friends left in harm’s way after witnessing the comparative expediency with which Syrian refugees and now those fleeing Ukraine have been processed. Opposition critics were less than impressed, saying it’s been eight months since the Taliban took over and that many of those who worked at the Canadian embassy already had high-level security screening to do so.The Taliban promised shortly after it retook control last August that it would not take revenge against former government workers, members of the security services, or those who worked with western forces.
The revenge killings are often horrifying, involving in some case summary executions that are documented on video. The Times reports that they were “widespread, touching every region of the country, shattering families and communities, and giving a lie to the Taliban’s promises of tolerance and moderation.”
