B.C. Premier says he's "very troubled" by reports of China's interference in Vancouver's 2022 election and has asked CSIS for a briefing.

The story prompted public responses Thursday from several public figures, including Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, his predecessor Stewart, and the only current councillor named in the Globe’s story, first-term ABC Coun. Lenny Zhou, all of whom said they supported an investigation.Thursday evening expressing “strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition” to the reports “smearing and discrediting the Consulate-General of China and the consular officers.

“Some Canadian politicians and media outlets, out of ulterior motives, have been making groundless accusations and spreading misinformation that the Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver interfered in Canada’s elections and internal affairs,” the statement says. “Though utterly groundless, these claims have seriously misled Canadian public opinion about China, jeopardized China-Canadian relations and damaged China’s image.

The consulate’s statement said China has never interfered in the internal affairs of other countries and has no interest in doing so. The statement counters that it is western nations such as Canada, not China, that are interfering in other countries’ affairs, saying those countries have “indulged in political manipulation on Taiwan question and issues related to China’s Xinjiang and Hong Kong, condoned and supported anti-China activities and harmed China’s security and stability.

Stewart, who was elected mayor in 2018, told Postmedia News this week he had a friendly relationship with the local Chinese consulate during the early years of his term, as he did with other foreign officials in Vancouver. However, part way through his term, relations soured, he said.Article content
