In that same year, Chris Ashford took over the old Sonic Drive-In on South W.W. White where his father, Ed Ashford, had been running Ed’s Smoke-N-Q. Chris had ideas of his own, and while his dad moved Ed’s a few miles north to Rockdale Drive, Chris opened BBQLIFE By Chris.
What hasn’t changed for 2M Smokehouse or BBQLIFE is a commitment to great barbecue on the north and south ends of this 3.5-mile stretch of South W.W. White between East Houston and East Southcross. It’s the same expanse of this blue-collar thoroughfare where you’ll find the 20-plus-year San Antonio veterans Chatman’s Chicken and Big Lou’s Pizza, along with the grocery-store chain La Michoacana Market, where the taquería counter runs like a mom-and-pop cafe.
The guys no longer camp out in the pit room. They’ve had time to train a staff, time to think about what’s next. They’ve already pulled open the flaps on a trailer at the Government Hill food-truck park Bésame. Now it’s time to keep building out their new project in Castroville, a restaurant with a barbecue soul but an open mind for other things, with sights on September.At Big Lou's Pizza, a 42-inch pizza is a spectacle shared with the whole table.
