EMR will not provide alternative transport for services that are cancelled or altered

Rail passengers have been warned about the affect of extreme heat on services. East Midlands Railway have asked people only to travel if necessary on Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures predicted to hit 37C and they have cancelled trains as a result.

EMR will be running a reduced timetable at the start of next week as a result of the extremely hot weather forecast. They added they were unable to provide alternative transport for the services that are cancelled/altered. EMR explained rail tracks are typically 20 degrees warmer than the air above. As a result the extreme heat could cause the track to buckle and bend which poses a serious safety risk to Intercity trains which travel at speeds between 100 and 125 miles per hour.To keep people safe, a lower speed limit will be in place on the Midland Main Line on Monday and Tuesday. There will be fewer services and journeys will take significantly longer.
