China's state media says at least 21 people have been killed in a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in the southwestern province of Sichuan.
The Associated PressFirefighters gather near a damaged wall of a fire station after an earthquake in Hailuogou in China's southwestern Sichuan province.Earlier, authorities had reported seven deaths in Luding county and 14 more in neighbouring Shimian county to the south. Three of the dead were workers at the Hailuogou Scenic Area, a glacier and forest nature reserve.
The temblor struck a mountainous area in Luding county shortly after noon on Monday, the China Earthquake Networks Center said. "A 300-member rescue team has arrived at the quake zone to carry out rescue operations," said China's ambassador to ASEAN Deng Xijun on Twitter. "There was a strong earthquake in June, but it wasn't very scary. This time I was really scared, because I live on a high floor and the shaking made me dizzy," she told The Associated Press.
