After the release of Earthbound on Nintendo Switch for Nintendo Switch Online users, Nintendo has shared the original player guide for Earthbound from the '90s. Earthbound is a quirky JRPG originally released in 1994 and has become a cult classic. It is the second game in what is known as the Mother series in Japan.
Because Earthbound has not been available in the United States while being available in Japan, it hasn't enjoyed the same popularity or success, but over the years has become a fan favorite. The first game of the Earthbound series known as Mother or Earthbound Beginnings didn't even have a typical release outside of Japan. The popularity of Earthbound has inspired modern computer RPGs like Undertale, Deltarune, and Omori.
Earthbound isn't necessarily an easy game to play especially for newcomers compared to other RPGs, so an in-depth guide is appreciated. Part of Mother's popularity was also due to its complexity and the darker themes it tackles. Earthbound is similar to Ocarina of Time, serving as a coming-of-age story. In Earthbound, Ness is faced with terrifying foes that mature him and convince him that the world is more corrupt than he thought.
For players of Earthbound, the guide is very nostalgic with its fonts and imagery from the 1990s, but also extremely helpful just as it was back then. Earthbound was very different from RPGs released at the time due to how offbeat its darker themes and even newer Nintendo users will appreciate the game- and might need help doing so.
