Saturday’s 45th Annual Avon Lake Earlybird Cross Country Invitational was held at Lorain County Community College.

ELYRIA, Ohio — For a meet that’s hosted by a Lorain County school and held at Lorain County Community College, Saturday’s 45th Annual Avon Lake Earlybird Cross Country Invitational sure had a Summit County feel to it.

That’s because the most intriguing team battle occurred in the boys Maroon Division, which saw Hudson pull away in the final mile to take the title from front-running Revere. The Explorers scored 37 points to 51 for the Minutemen. Led by individual winner Jeremy Snyder, Westlake was third with 95. The girls Maroon Division was not quite as tight, but Summit County still was well represented. Shaker Heights showed superior depth to win the title with 46 points, followed by Hudson with 73, St. Joseph Academy with 75 and Revere with 88. The individual winner was SJA freshman Sofia Koons, whose time of 19:49.1 made her the only girl to break 20 minutes on a warm day on a challenging course.
