Blake Snell walks five; half the Padres' six losses this season have come with left-hander on the mound
Not together enough, though, as the Padres finished off a winning trip with a 5-2 loss to the Mets on Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field.
Manager Bob Melvin even tried to give Snell a longer leash by sending him out to face left-hander Jeff McNeil at the start of the sixth and leaving him in after McNeil walked.One pitch into his day, reliever Brent Honeywell was in even further trouble when he bobbled a bunt by Eduardo Escobar that loaded the bases.
The Padres, who went up 2-0 in the first when Juan Soto followed Machado’s one-out walk with a 453-foot home run to left-center field, did not score over the final eight innings. In the seventh, a lead-off walk by Rougned Odor and a one-out walk by Trent Grisham was followed by a Machado fly ball out to center field and a Soto fly ball out to left field.
But far more troubling is the inability of their opening-day starter to throw enough competitive pitches to get enough outs.
