The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has unveiled proposals to revamp the existing framework as part of its Modernising Support for Independent Living: The Health and Disability Green Paper

Major changes could be on the horizon for personal independence payments , as direct cash payments might be replaced with other forms of help such as vouchers, according to proposals unveiled by the Department for Work and Pensions . These proposed alterations to the current PIP system are part of a larger plan titled Modernising Support for Independent Living: The Health and Disability Green Paper.

The DWP explains its intentions: "We need to ensure we have a system that is sustainable and fair for all. PIP was designed as a contribution towards the extra costs faced by people with health conditions and disabilities to enable independent living." Currently, about 3.5 million people receive PIP, with 2.6 million of them being of working age. According to information from the Department itself, processing of new PIP claims has increased significantly, with around 33,000 requests being processed per month more than double the number prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, reports Wales Online.

The DWP stated: "The UK has used a fixed-cash transfer system since the 1970s but there are a number of international systems that look at the specific extra costs people have and provide more tailored support instead. For example in New Zealand the amount of disability allowance is based on a person's extra costs which are verified by a health practitioner.
