Durham Region officials are marking Emergency Preparedness Week from now until Saturday. They say it's always a good time to put an emergency kit together.

They say it’s always a good time to put an emergency kit together.

“[One] of the fundamental things that you want to look for is ‘do you have a flashlight?'” said James Kilgour, director of emergency management, during an interview with Durham Radio News. “Do you know where your medication is? Do you have an understanding of vital papers, such as your insurance numbers? Key contact phone numbers? Water is another great example.”

“I highly recommend, if you have young children, also having just toys or magazines or colouring books, to keep them entertained,” he added. Other things to keep on-hand are first-aid kits, a battery-operated radio, non-perishable food and cash.“It’s unexpected,” said Kilgour. “We all live in a world, in a climate, that can change rather drastically.
