Sammy Wilson has been urged to ‘look at the world around him’ after dubbing a parliamentary debate about ‘extreme heat preparedness’, hysteria.
During the discussion on Monday, he asked the UK’s Secretary of State for Health, Steve Barclay, if he agreed “most of our constituents, if they are not working, are probably out enjoying [the heat]? When it gets too hot, they will go and sit in the shade, have a cold drink and cool down”.Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was shaking his head in disbelief on the bench behind him.
SDLP South Belfast MP Claire Hanna says Mr Wilson’s “long-standing refusal to acknowledge the reality and dangers of the climate crisis in light of the mounting evidence is irrational and dangerous”. “Warning people to take care in this weather is nothing to do with ‘heatwave hysteria’, rather a genuine attempt to keep people safe from the serious potential harm associated with these kind of temperatures.
