The capital region and other parts of B.C. are experiencing a significant dry spell as January unfolds, with little to no precipitation in recent weeks. Meteorologists attribute this unusual weather pattern to a southward shift in the storm track, with no major winter storms on the horizon.

For some, Dry January means abstaining from alcohol. However, this year in the capital region and other parts of British Columbia, it signifies a distinct lack of precipitation over the past two weeks. After an average December that brought 151 millimeters of rain and snow to Victoria International Airport and 93 mm to the Gonzales weather station, remarkably close to normal levels, there's been a scarcity of both rain and snow.

Typically, January at the airport sees about 144 mm of precipitation. However, by January 13th, almost halfway through the month, only 28.2 mm had been recorded. 'So, we're very dry so far,' said Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Proctor. At Gonzales, where January usually averages around 111 mm of precipitation, only 16.4 mm had been recorded by January 13th. 'It's kind of an interesting start to winter,' Proctor remarked. 'And the forecast isn't showing much change in the next few days, so it's going to remain fairly dry.' There's almost no rain or snow predicted for Victoria, Duncan, Nanaimo, and Courtenay at least until next Monday, with Thursday being the only day with a slight chance of showers. These dry conditions persist for much of the inner south-coast area, according to Proctor, and are expected to continue for the next week or so. There are no significant winter storms on the horizon. 'The storm track is basically sagging southward,' Proctor explained. 'We're getting a weak Arctic outbreak, but I don't think it will have much impact on the south end of the Island. The real depth of the cold air is moving eastward.' Increased cold air could potentially reach the Interior and some of B.C.'s inlets, he said, but 'nothing is going to drastically change conditions for us on the Island.' Around this time last year, Greater Victoria and most of Vancouver Island experienced a snowstorm that dropped up to 20 centimeters, including 18 centimeters at the airport, leading to the cancellation of school, mail service, and some bus routes
