Temporary flight restrictions have been put in place over critical New Jersey infrastructure due to concerns about increased drone activity. While exceptions are made for essential operations, the restrictions aim to address public safety concerns.
Temporary flight restrictions have been implemented over 22 critical New Jersey infrastructure locations at the request of federal security partners. The restrictions apply to airspace within a 1-mile radius of each location, up to 400 feet above ground level.
While the vast majority of unmanned aircraft will be banned, exceptions are made for flights necessary for national defense, homeland security, law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, or disaster response, as well as commercial activities with a valid statement of work. There have been reports of increased drone activity in New Jersey, with residents reporting thousands of sightings to the FBI. Authorities acknowledge the concerns but emphasize that most sightings likely have simple explanations, such as commercial drones, hobbyist drones, law enforcement drones, or even misidentified aircraft and stars.
