80-year-old Thomas Newton from Wasilla appeared to have suffered a medical event immediately prior to the collision, according to Alaska State Troopers.

One person died in a single-vehicle collision Friday morning on the Parks Highway near Meadow Lakes Loop, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers found a Ford pickup with a single occupant in the trees near the roadway around 11 a.m. on Friday, theyThe driver, whom troopers later identified as 80-year-old Thomas Newton from Wasilla, was declared dead at the scene after lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. A preliminary investigation found that Newton appeared to have experienced a “medical event” right before the collision occurred, according to troopers.
