The chase began when police suspected a person of shoplifting from Fair Oaks Mall.
Police chased a vehicle from Fairfax County into D.C. after authorities say the driver shoplifted from a mall, then intentionally struck an officer trying to stop him.
Fairfax County police said the incident began at about 12:25 p.m., when an officer confronted a suspected shoplifter leaving the Fair Oaks Mall parking lot in his pickup truck. Police did not specify what they suspect the person had stolen.An officer got out of his cruiser and told the driver to stop, and the driver intentionally hit the officer with his vehicle, police said.
The suspect then fled in the truck, and police followed the driver onto Interstate 66, heading toward D.C., police said. During a lengthy chase, police said the suspect “struck several police vehicles.” The pursuit concluded when the driver and a passenger abandoned the truck in D.C. on Constitution Avenue and 9th Street NW, about 23 miles away from the mall.
Fairfax County police said the driver and the passenger, whom they have yet to identify, were arrested a short distance away by D.C. police. Fairfax County police said they will be charging them with felony assault on a police officer, fleeing and eluding, and reckless driving.
