A trial has begun for a driver accused of impaired driving causing the death of a 69-year-old road worker in Nanaimo, British Columbia, in 2021.
A memorial 'X', using the victim’s own rakes and hardhat, marks the spot on the Trans-Canada highway south of Nanaimo where Ray Ferguson lost his life when a car came crashing through his jobsite on Sept. 23, 2021, and right into his road paving crew.
On Tuesday, the driver, 52-year-old Christanne Marie Boufford – accused of impaired driving causing his death, dangerous driving and causing injury to another worker – stood trial for the crash that saw her car go past traffic control workers and into the road crew, “Oh, it was huge. They were all there. Half of them probably saw what happened,” Hub City paving supervisor Art Kennedy told CHEK News outside the Nanaimo courthouse Tuesday. According to Kennedy, 69-year-old Ferguson, who was a father of one, was liked by everyone on his crew, and tragically was about to finish up work for the year. “That was his last day and he was gonna go home, and yeah. He was quite excited about it and, yeah, never happened,” said Kennedy.She has plead not guilty to all charges against her, and her defense is arguing charter violations were committed during those RCMP tests, and that RCMP has not disclosed all video evidence. The trial is expected to hear from on-scene witnesses, including members of Ferguson’s paving crew, and has been adjourned until Wednesday
