The Ministry of Transportation and Transit installs two new highway cameras in northern British Columbia, enhancing road safety and visibility.
The Ministry of Transportation and Transit enhanced highway visibility in northern British Columbia in 2024 by installing two new highway cameras. The first camera, situated at Augier Road and Highway 16, approximately 22 kilometers east of Burns Lake, became operational on October 23rd. This location now boasts north and south views along Highway 16, coupled with views extending along Augier Forest Service Road, augmenting the previous single view.
The second camera, positioned at the Pine Pass on Highway 97, commenced operation on November 25th. Located north of Mackenzie Junction at the access road leading to the Powder King Mountain Resort region, this installation replaced an existing camera that went offline due to component failure and the unavailability of replacement parts. Ministry crews strategically install webcams throughout British Columbia's highways based on needs identified by residents, contractors, or weather experts. Throughout 2024, DriveBC added 22 new cameras, resulting in a total of 37 additional views. In a bid to improve user experience, DriveBC is seeking public feedback on its plans to redesign its web portal in 2025, replacing the existing website. The new site promises a simplified map, clearer event notifications, innovative advisory features, and enhanced mobile usability, as outlined in a ministry press release
