If drive-in shows are the future of live music, then we may just keep our cars at home.

The three-day, nine-show event will take place in the parking lots of amphitheaters, where concertgoers will have two parking spaces between each vehicle to tailgate and watch their favorite artists play from a distance.announced a similar event this coming Saturday, when he will broadcast a one-night drive-in concert to 300 outdoor theaters nationwide, with tickets priced at a hefty $100 per car.

It's a commendable effort by these musicians, who are simply trying to give their fans some summertime entertainment after months of people quarantined indoors. And don't get us wrong: Social distancing and wearing masks are absolutely necessary in stopping the spread of the virus. So if that means dancing through your car's open sunroof, rather than in a throng of sweaty strangers, then by all means go for it.

More importantly, there's a connection that's lost between artists and fans when there's a windshield between them.

We remember all the hoarse singalongs, dates we kissed, joints we shared, and strangers who have puked on us during shows. We miss them all, and will gladly wait until live music returns in full – whether it's this fall or next year – to experience them again.
