The Jays’ 2015 opening day starter was knocked around in his spring return.

The sight of No. 36 in blue climbing the pitcher’s mound, warming up to start. That familiar delivery, the same intense stare seven years after we last saw him.“I thought it was my best opportunity,” the Jays’ 2015 opening day starter said after two innings of work in an eventual 7-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves. “That’s why I came back here. I’m just trying to go out there and compete and execute my game and go from there.

The right-hander was traded to Pittsburgh at the deadline in 2016, bringing back Francisco Liriano, Reese McGuire and Harold Ramírez. Liriano was dealt the next year for Teoscar Hernández.Since the trade, Hutchison has been with eight organizations. He’s battled injury and ineffectiveness and made just 26 major-league starts, 18 last season with Detroit, where he put up a 4.53 ERA over 105 1/3 innings.

He wound up giving up two runs on five hits, finishing with a strikeout of all-star third baseman Austin Riley. Bullpen coach Luis Hurtado and Jose Mayorga, manager of the Jays’ Florida Complex League team, have gone to California to work with Kirk, along with a couple of strength and conditioning coaches.
