Afternoon rally at Spooky Nook draws about 400 as Mastriano begins final leg of his gubernatorial campaign.
MANHEIM TOWNSHIP - Republican governor candidate Doug Mastriano, sporting a bright red Phillies cap in honor of the Pennsylvania’s World Series entrant, powered through a chesty, optimistic afternoon rally in Lancaster County Saturday, breaking some new ground along the way for his unorthodox campaign.
Mastriano, saying crime is what he hears about most on the campaign trail in many areas of the state, blamed Shapiro, the state’s sitting Attorney General, for spiking gun crime rates in Philadelphia and other urban pockets.
He also proposed stronger locks on prison doors in: vowing to oppose any bail reforms that would make it easier for people accused of violent crime to hit the street without having to post some kind of cash collateral; guaranteeing victim’s input on bail decisions; and saying he wants to swing the pendulum back toward longer mandatory terms for repeat offenders.
Taking a handful of questions from reporters afterward, Mastriano refused to say whether he would accept the results of the upcoming election, arguing the question is built upon “the premise that anyone who asked questions about 2020 is an election denier, which is a pile of nonsense.” After that, he said, he is looking forward to letting voters lead the way on election integrity with a referendum, possibly as early as 2023 pending court challenges, on inserting language in the state Constitution to require every voter to produce identification every time they vote.
Mastriano noted that governors, like his political hero Gov. Ron DeSantis in Florida, also led the way to reopening from COVID in some states, but for that to happen here the voters must first elect a candidate who shares those values.“My vision of Pennsylvania is that we get back to basics.
