That journey continues now with The Gates Of No Return, a fine new collection of songs about Black Islanders that Parsons wrote over the winter months and recorded at Carriage House Studios in New Glasgow with longtime friend Rik Barron.“We think we captured something special,” Parsons says of the album. “There is a cultural relevance in the songs and the history they speak to.”
Benny Binns tells the story of another Black boxer, one who died by his own knife during a fight with a friend.The Black Battalion shines the spotlight on Black men who petitioned the government for the right to serve their country in the First World War. Free Love recounts the story of Freelove Hazard, who was convicted and sentenced to be hanged for stealing coins and clothing in 1796. A group of women in Charlottetown petitioned Governor Fanning on her behalf, asking that she be banished from the Island instead of hanged.
