Ontario’s decision to increase the minimum wage comes as the PC government makes a series of moves to reach out to workers and appease private-sector unions ahead of June election

government is increasing the province’s minimum wage to $15 an hour on Jan. 1, after previously cancelling the wage hike when it took office three years ago.

The change announced Tuesday means those earning minimum wage will see a boost to $15 an hour from $14.35, starting next year. The increase will also apply to the $12.55 “liquor servers minimum wage” paid to bartenders and wait staff who earn tips, eliminating this special lower wage rate. Rates for students under 18, homeworkers and hunting, fishing and wilderness guides will also see increases.
