The reality is that doctors can prescribe drugs to addicts, but they must be used at a safe consumption site. The drugs are provided at the site and only the site. Poilievre leaves the image that drug addicts can go to a pharmacy and walk out with a whole bag of drugs, which is ridiculous.
The Saskatchewan government refuses to fund safe consumption sites. Last spring when funding was refused for Prairie Harm Reduction’s safe consumption site, the province stated that it was due to funding restraints. Now with a billion-dollar surplus, it has the resources to support the much-needed program.Article content
In Saskatoon the safe consumption site at Prairie Harm reduction is open from Monday to Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday and Friday from 2 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. In Regina, the Newo-Yotina Friendship Centre is open seven days a week from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Addiction needs to be approached as a health issue. The roots of drug addiction come from trauma, be it death in the family, physical or sexual abuse, violence or any other event that scars the individual.Article content
