Mary Simon is an accomplished individual who has served with distinction and paid her dues.

This is why I see the online comments as so reprehensible. These weak, anonymous trolls contrast so poorly with our governor general. Social media has given them a stage that they would otherwise not have and instead of being ashamed of their ignorance, they flaunt it.

Women and minorities that enter public life are expected to receive abuse and work harder to get ahead. But it comes at a cost. Many people are saying that it isn’t worth it. Often you will hear people saying that you just need to toughen up, as if women are the weaker sex, when in fact women by and large are stronger than men in determination and commitment. That is why these nameless trolls fear and hate strong women.Article content

They have been taught from a perspective of white privilege and no matter what a failure they are, they are still superior to Indigenous women. It’s a sad state of affairs and it’s time for change.
